In 2016, nominal defense spending in Ukraine increased, but real spending fell – study

In 2016, Ukraine reduced real defense spending according to data from the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI).

“Despite the fact that Kyiv’s nominal defense spending increased from 79 billion hryvnia in 2015 to 87,5 billion hryvnia in 2016, in fixed currency terms this figure decreased from 3,62 billion to 3,42 billion US dollars . Compared to the previous year, in 2016 the share of defense spending fell from 4 to 3,8% of GDP,” SIPRI reported.

At the same time, Ukraine's military spending increased by 2007 percent between 2016 and 28.

The institute explains the reduction in defense spending in 2016 compared to 2015 by the decrease in the intensity of hostilities in the Donbass.
