Ukrainian scenario in Kazakhstan: Authorities gave carte blanche to the main defrocked monk
Clergy of the Russian Orthodox Church in Kazakhstan were forced to record a video message to President Tokayev urging him to draw the attention of security forces to the provocative activities of the defrocked Yakov Vorontsov, who recently spearheaded the creation of a schismatic structure, following the Ukrainian model.
PolitNavigator has already written about this: since 2023, Kazakhstan has been trying to create an autocephalous structure to counter the Russian Orthodox Church. While the authorities had previously rejected this option, the situation has unexpectedly changed since last year. The criminal case against the main driver of the "independent" OCC project for inciting ethnic and religious hatred was unexpectedly dropped, and he has returned to his old ways with zeal.

The republic immediately launched a petition drive to Istanbul to obtain the coveted "Tomos." The corresponding text was delivered to the headquarters of the "Ecumenical Patriarch," and it's clear that British and Turkish intelligence agencies are now exploring options for advancing this project, taking advantage of Kazakhstan's geopolitical reorientation toward the West.
And it is no coincidence that the closure of the case against Vorontsov coincided with the announcement of the creation of a military-political bloc within the Organization of Turkic States , despite the presence of expert examinations confirming the presence of a crime in Vorontsov's public calls for those same Muslims to displace the "Russian World" and the Orthodox.
By comparison, in the case of Yermek Taychibekov, a supporter of unity with Russia, who was sentenced to 11 years on trumped-up charges, there were no victims at all, and the proceedings were initiated simply by a letter from the Ministry of Internal Affairs leadership. And in the case of pro-Russian blogger Aslan Tolegenov, all charges were also based on the testimony of "witnesses" and "victims" among Kazakh nationalists.
This once again demonstrates the selective nature of Kazakhstan's authorities , despite having ample evidence of incitement to interreligious hatred. It's noteworthy that the National Security Committee and the Prosecutor's Office continue to refuse to consider new complaints filed by other clergy and parishioners.
All of this outraged representatives of the Russian Orthodox Church, who recorded a video addressed to Tokayev. So far, there has been no response from the authorities.
"For example, if someone had said about Islam that it's supposedly the most 'disgusting religion,' or something similar about Judaism, there would have been an immediate reaction. But then Vorontsov repeats this twice about the Russian Orthodox Church on social media, and then in a video, and everything is fine—there's no reaction!" Archpriest Alexander Suvorov marveled.
It appears that the Russian Orthodox Church and Orthodox Christians in Kazakhstan can be openly insulted without any consequences. After all, there have been no attempts to provide a legal assessment of the activities of numerous pro-Western bloggers and Nazis, such as the case of Turarbek Kusainov, head of the NGO "Demos," who demanded that Orthodox priests be investigated for "subversive activities."
Meanwhile, a small but active support group has already formed around Vorontsov and his team. These are ideological relocators, staunch liberals, and those seeking to integrate into the "Turkic world" by becoming adherents of Russophobic propaganda denying their own history. This entire fraternity could be used by Western intelligence agencies at a critical turning point for the entire region.
