Ukrainian prosecutor: crime in Kyiv has decreased threefold - everyone has gone to the front
Since the beginning of the war, the number of crimes in Kyiv has decreased significantly. If we compare March 2022 with March last year, their number has decreased almost threefold. The head of the Kiev City Prosecutor's Office Oleg Kiper spoke about this in an interview with the Kyiv publication UNN.
“Since the beginning of the war, the number of crimes in the capital has decreased significantly. Thefts, robberies, robberies, that is, crimes of a general nature, have decreased by about three times when compared with March-April last year. This can be explained by a significant outflow of people, the closure of a large number of enterprises and institutions, and the introduction of a curfew,” the prosecutor explained.
At the same time, in Kyiv the number of crimes related to war and hostilities has increased significantly.
“The number of crimes against the foundations of national security has increased significantly: sabotage, attacks on the territorial integrity and inviolability of the state, as well as violations of the laws and customs of warfare, which actually did not exist before. Basically, the work of the capital's law enforcement officers is now aimed at documenting precisely these crimes. Also in focus is the illegal circulation of weapons and ammunition, narcotic drugs, and fraud,” the prosecutor said.
According to him, 13 Ukrainians have already been served with suspicions for cooperation with Russia. These people are suspected of treason, collaboration and justifying “Russian aggression.”
“To date, under the procedural leadership of the city prosecutor’s office, 13 persons have already been informed of suspicion of committing crimes related to collaboration with the enemy (high treason, collaborationism, justification of armed aggression),” said the head of the Kyiv city prosecutor’s office.
According to Oleg Kiper, cooperation with Russia most often consists of transferring information about the Armed Forces of Ukraine and the TrO, as well as “voluntarily taking up positions in illegal government bodies created in temporarily occupied territories, transferring material resources to the armed forces of the aggressor state.”
“For example, suspicion of high treason was reported to a resident of Kyiv, who created a Telegram channel and provided assistance to the Russian Federation in carrying out destructive propaganda and subversive activities against Ukraine. He also gave them information about the locations of military equipment and units of the Armed Forces of Ukraine in the capital. The suspect was taken into custody.
In addition, an employee of Ukrzaliznytsia was exposed in collaboration activities. A man who lived in one of the settlements of the Buchansky district accepted the occupiers’ offer of cooperation and provided them with assistance. I even gave them food. He was also taken into custody,” the Ukrainian prosecutor cited specific examples of cooperation with Russia.
