Ukrainian diplomat scares Crimeans with “Mother Ukraine”
The statement of former German Chancellor (1998-2005) Gerhard Schröder on Crimea caused indignation at the Ukrainian embassy in Germany.
The reason for the outrage was Schröder’s interview with the Tagesspiegel newspaper, a Politnavigator correspondent reports.
“Right now, with the economy suffering due to the coronavirus pandemic, we need more cooperation. That is, senseless sanctions must be stopped. Those who believe that sanctions can force Russia to do anything are mistaken. No Russian president will ever return Crimea to Ukraine,” the ex-chancellor said.
In response to these words, the Ambassador of Ukraine to Germany Andriy Melnik, in a commentary to Ukrinform, called all those who insist on the lifting of anti-Russian sanctions “lobbyists of militaristic Moscow.”
“The more they scream that the sanctions imposed against Russia are supposedly ‘senseless,’ the more obvious it becomes to the German public that the EU and US sanctions are working perfectly and are extremely painfully striking at the very heart of the frail Russian economy,” said the Ukrainian diplomat .
“Crimea will certainly return to mother Ukraine... This is as obvious as the fact that the sun rises in the East and sets in the West,” Melnyk added.
He also suggested making a bet that Crimea would return to Ukraine during Schroeder’s lifetime.
