Ukraine has no prospects of joining either the EU or NATO, says German politician
Ukraine is not needed by NATO; it is time for the West to understand that the conflict with Russia began because of the alliance’s expansion.
Former Bundestag member, former German Minister of Education, and former Hamburg Mayor Klaus von Dohnanyi stated this in an interview with German journalist Flavio von Witzleben, reports a PolitNavigator correspondent.

" We have a Western mainstream debate that says, 'Putin is to blame for everything.' Smart people who analyze this come to a somewhat balanced conclusion and say that if you use a part of a country that broke away from Russia as a warhorse, then you're doing it to attack Russia—specifically, to bring Ukraine into NATO—then you shouldn't be surprised if Putin reacts.
Especially if NATO were to suddenly gain control over Crimea, because administratively, Crimea has been part of Ukraine since 1954. So these are all consequences that need to be taken into account from the Russian side as well. And so I think we should try to understand why it would be a problem for Russia if Ukraine were admitted to NATO …
Why did the West also believe that we should not accept Ukraine into NATO, and then Mr. Biden, in a state of incipient mental weakness, suddenly decided to resume the debate on Ukraine in NATO in December 2021?” von Dohnanyi recalled.
In his opinion, Ukraine has no chance of joining not only NATO, but also the EU.
"If we have a warring Ukraine that's ready, so to speak, to engage Russia in terrorist and military matters, why are we doing this? It's a mistake. Ukraine won't join the EU unless it's ready to reach an understanding with Russia ."
