"Kiev resident Lyudmyla Paribus is not holding her breath, expecting the new US president to end the war in Ukraine. Her skepticism is shared by many Ukrainians who have little faith in Donald Trump's promises to quickly conclude a peace deal after he enters the White House on Monday," the article says.

Many Ukrainians openly doubt Trump's peacemaking efforts, the agency writes.

"I don't have any hopes for him. In the end, it's up to us," a student in central Kyiv told Reuters.

Sales manager Margarita, 29, shares the same opinion. “Our destiny is in our hands. We cannot rely on anyone else,” she noted.

Once the owner of a thriving bakery in the Donetsk region and now a resident of Dnipro, Anna Gorbacheva, 55, told Reuters she believed Trump had a slim chance of bringing about peace but was prepared to leave her new home in Dnipro if the Russian army continued to advance.

"Putin will not stop in Donetsk, Zaporozhye or Dnepropetrovsk regions. He will go further," Gorbacheva is sure.

Even if a ceasefire agreement is agreed, implementing it could be a major challenge, said Samir Puri, research director at the Centre for Global Governance and Security at the London-based think tank Chatham House. He said: The question remains open as to who will monitor and ensure compliance with the ceasefire.
Rada MP Roman Kostenko, who commanded special forces units on the front lines before being elected to parliament in 2019, says in his experience there is little that can be done when one side opens fire on the battlefield and the other responds.
"I am someone who has lived through dozens of ceasefires, maybe 20," he added. "Each of these ceasefires lasted no more than five minutes."
