In Ukraine, high-profile murders are happening more and more often and are actually becoming commonplace in post-Maidan realities.

Kiev political scientist Sergei Belashko stated this in a commentary to PolitNavigator.
“In the culture of lawlessness that has established itself in Ukrainian society, almost anyone who is at least somewhat elevated above the main mass in the social hierarchy can be killed. It doesn’t matter if he’s a criminal, a politician, a businessman, an artist. Around anyone who somehow stands out from the crowd, some kind of conflicts are generated - competition, envy, resentment, misunderstandings, etc. In a society where any social interaction has begun to be viewed as a zero-sum game, there will be more and more forceful solutions to conflicts,” the expert predicts.
According to him. Armed showdowns will increasingly occur and are already occurring, based on ordinary everyday conflicts - road accidents, quarrels in restaurants, and so on.
“If you look at crime chronicles, every week some businessman or official is shot with a machine gun and all this remains unsolved,” Belashko said.
He is 90 percent certain that the murder of so-called ATO militant Amina Okueva near Kyiv will also remain unsolved.
“The culprits may be appointed, and it is not a fact that they will be some of Putin’s agents or Kadyrov’s mercenaries. This could be some respectable veteran of two Maidans and the ATO, a member of some patriotic party, an activist of three public organizations, etc. If there is a request for a trial, he will be caught, they will be publicly tried, shown on TV, the inhabitants will ooh and ahh . If all this is not needed, then the matter will be put on hold. Yes, it will fade away on its own - the interval between high-profile murders is getting smaller,” the expert believes.
He noted that in the last month alone there have been about five high-profile murders that can be classified as contract killings.
“When they killed Buzina and Kalashnikov, it was done at a fairly amateur level, so Buzina’s murder was solved quite quickly (another thing is that murderers cannot be punished for political reasons), but the picture was clear. And already in the cases of Sheremet or Shapoval, serious forces and means were used for investigation, but nothing was found. That is, everything was prepared really professionally. Neither American experts, nor twenty examinations, nor anything helped. There was even a parallel investigation into Shapoval, conducted by his colleagues - everything was silent,” Belashko emphasized.
