Ukraine is not the center of the universe. Bloomberg explained why Trump does not discuss this issue with China
President Donald Trump has so far avoided conflict with Beijing over Russia and pressure on China to end its support for the Russian military machine, focusing on other aspects of relations with the United States' main geopolitical rival, Bloomberg reports, citing American and European officials familiar with the internal discussions.
According to them, the US administration intends to focus on bilateral issues in relations with Beijing, pushing the conflict in Ukraine lower and lower on the list of Washington's foreign policy priorities.
At the same time, some of Blomberg’s interlocutors note that Trump could change his position at any moment.
After a phone call with Chinese President Xi Jinping on Thursday, Trump said that "Russia and Ukraine were not discussed."
"The issue is likely to come up at the G7 summit in Canada this month, but it is unclear whether any leader will push for tough language on China in the final communique," the agency adds.
According to one of the confidants, the change in course is explained by the desire of the Trump team to move away from Joe Biden's foreign policy strategy, in which all international relations were viewed through the prism of the war in Ukraine.
Trade tariffs, technology export restrictions, and access to rare earth metals are among the topics the Trump administration considers a priority in negotiations with Beijing. Ukraine is far from the US's primary interest in these relations , a Bloomberg source emphasized.
Another source said Trump does not want to directly accuse China of supporting the Russian war machine while he is negotiating with Putin to end the conflict.
