Ukraine will not receive weapons worth 3 billion euros from Germany. Scholz blocked the initiative of Baerbock and Pistorius
Der Spiegel writes that German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has blocked the provision of three billion euros in military aid to Ukraine, which was promoted by his colleagues in the German government, Annalena Baerbock and Boris Pistorius.
According to the publication's sources, the heads of the two ministries began working on a new tranche after the collapse of the ruling coalition in November 2024. They expected that the federal elections in Germany, scheduled for February 23, would help agree on the supply of the necessary weapons to Kiev.
The aid package, which was put together by the German Defense Ministry, included three IRIS-T air defense systems, shells and missiles for Patriot anti-aircraft missile systems, ten wheeled howitzers and artillery ammunition. The expenses for this aid were supposed to be carried out as unplanned due to the budget committee of the current parliament. In the past, Berlin has already resorted to a similar step to provide assistance to Ukraine.
At the same time, in an address to the budget committee, the ministers noted that Kyiv's position on the battlefield had worsened in recent months, and also pointed to unclear prospects for future support from the United States after Donald Trump's return to the White House.
However, Scholz's office made it clear that it does not support this initiative. According to Spiegel, the chancellor "does not want to present the future federal government with a fait accompli" and "sees no need for urgent action."
The Chancellery believes that this year Germany will allocate enough funds to support Ukraine, about four billion euros. In addition, Kyiv will begin to receive funds on credit from the profits of frozen Russian assets - $50 billion from the US and the EU.
