Scientist: Kyiv is threatened by radiation, take the children away!
A large-scale forest fire that began today in the Chernobyl zone threatens Kyiv with repeated radiation contamination. Dmitry Gilitukha, an employee of the National University of Bioresources and Environmental Management of Ukraine, published a corresponding warning on his page on a social network.

Gilitukha writes that the main danger is that the fire could have already engulfed areas of the forest contaminated with radiation after the Chernobyl accident. According to him, this already happened in 1992-1995, and then the authorities classified this data.
“I saw calm comments that everything was under control, and the fire was still far from the station... But that’s not the danger, and there’s no forest near the station itself.
Oh people, why doesn't anyone write about the real danger of re-pollution? At least the children were taken out of Kyiv and the cities around, the wind is south, exactly in this direction, and 400 hectares is an area of 4 x 4 km.
I once worked on the problem of forest fires in the Chernobyl nuclear power plant zone, defended my dissertation, there are several scientific papers on this topic... Nowadays, a very large amount of dead wood and fallen trees have accumulated in the forests of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant zone, which is caused by the situation of lack of forest care, and all of this is wonderful forest combustible materials,” writes Gilitukha.
“It is not yet known in what level of pollution the fire is occurring. There are also relatively clean areas in the zone, so now it’s better to close the windows and spend less time outside,” the scientist urged.
Let us recall that the head of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine Arsen Avakov urged not to panic, assuring that the situation around the fire has stabilized.
“The radioactive background is normal... there is no reason for fear or panic. We took control,” Avakov assures.
