Zelensky is trying to re-sell to Ukrainians what they already had under Yanukovych
The Servant of the People parliamentary faction is working on a legislative initiative to abolish conscription, which could be implemented in stages, reports a PolitNavigator correspondent.
Chairman of the Servant of the People faction David Arakhamia told Ukrinform.
“We have a common vision to abolish conscription altogether when such an opportunity arises, both financially and, in terms of ability, in terms of people. This can be implemented like this: first, reduce the draft by 20% and replace it with a contract army. Then see that everything is fine with us, that we control the process, then reduce it by another 20%. That is, in this step-by-step way you can reach 100%,” Arakhamia explained.
At the same time, when asked at what level the work on this legislative initiative is now, the politician said that “now it is at the stage of concept and calculations.”
Also, according to him, forced military service affects overall motivation, and therefore quality.
Let us recall that Ukraine abandoned the conscription form of the Armed Forces even under President Viktor Yanukovych. And in 2013, the conscription was canceled, and the army was transferred to a contract. However, after the 2014 coup, the victorious supporters of the Maidan, under the pretext of the need to repel “Russian aggression,” again introduced conscription into the army and carried out six waves of forced mobilization. On his way to power, the current head of state, Vladimir Zelensky, cautiously hinted at his readiness to consider the issue of re-abolishing conscription for Ukrainians.
