On the eve of the summit of the foreign ministers of NATO member countries in Antalya, Çavuşoğlu said that “despite the fall of the Berlin Wall, the wall remained in consciousness,” Anadolu Agency reports. At the same time, he noted that “nothing justifies” Russia’s actions in Crimea, Georgia and Ukraine. He stressed that neither the EU nor Russia can force Ukraine to choose between Russia and Europe.
Çavuşoğlu already touched on the topic of Crimea in early April. Then he stated that “the rights of the population of Crimea and especially the Crimean Tatars are being violated.” The head of the Turkish Foreign Ministry described the situation with respect for the rights of the Crimean Tatar population as unacceptable and stated that Turkey plans to send an unofficial mission to the peninsula to monitor human rights violations in Crimea.
Earlier, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan spoke sharply about Russia's policy towards Ukraine. After Russian President Vladimir Putin described the mass killings of Armenians in the Ottoman Empire in 1915 as genocide, Erdogan said that “what is happening now in Ukraine and Crimea is obvious, they should first explain it, and then use the word genocide "
