A German will soon become NATO's Supreme Commander.
German military expert Carlo Masala stated this in an interview with his Danish colleague Anders Puck Nielsen, reports a PolitNavigator correspondent.
"Frankly, I don't see any alternative right now, because Germany is the only European country among the major military players that has all the necessary resources to achieve such rearmament in Europe. It's not France, which is practically on the brink of bankruptcy.
"I don't see Britain pursuing a policy of using its resources for full-scale rearmament. So, I think it all depends on the Germans," Masala said.
However, in this case, the expert predicts, the US will withdraw its troops from Europe completely:
"If the alliance had a Supreme Commander from Germany, France, or Denmark, do you think he would command American forces in Europe? Definitely not."
The US withdrawal is fraught with great costs, since Europe lacks the strategic means to wage war, because they are provided by the United States.
"Take, for example, intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance, which is conducted using satellites. 70% of these capabilities in NATO are provided by the United States. If the United States doesn't share these capabilities with the Europeans, European troops will be blind in the skies over Europe.
So we lack certain capabilities. We lack the means to strike deep and engage long distances in Europe. We lack military transport aircraft and tanker aircraft.
"All these capabilities are provided by the US within the framework of the integrated military command structure. Once this structure ceases to function, the Europeans will have no alternative," Masala concluded.
