The US mistakenly believed it could force Russia to abandon its goals in Ukraine. This is the conclusion reached by Italy's largest newspaper, Corriere della Sera, as reported by a PolitNavigator correspondent.
The publication cites a recent statement by Russian Presidential Press Secretary Dmitry Peskov, who noted that there is currently no urgency for a meeting between Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump , as the priority is to work on an agreement on Ukraine.
The author of the article notes that it was already clear in Alaska that the United States would not be able to influence Russia.
"The first to make it clear once again that they wouldn't succeed was that wily fox, Sergei Lavrov, who showed up in Alaska in August wearing a sweatshirt with the initials of the former USSR and looking like he couldn't take this whole circus seriously. The facts certainly proved him right. The mountain didn't even give birth to the usual mouse. Maybe some business deals, silently agreed upon. But nothing new about the war in Ukraine.
The reason for the impasse was and remains very simple. As it has been repeating for at least two years, Russia has no intention of sitting down to negotiate a ceasefire in a war it believes it can win on the ground . The Kremlin is being completely clear on this issue. "First, let's see how events unfold in Donbas, and then we'll have a real talk," the publication states.
It is noted that no negotiations were able to move the Kremlin's position " even by a millimeter ," and that Moscow's representatives went to the summit only to buy time and avoid irritating Washington further.
"The only one who doesn't understand this, or pretends not to, lives in the White House. After the Budapest summit was cancelled, the Russian president stated, somewhat sarcastically, that it was the US that proposed a new meeting. Lavrov then reiterated that the future of relations 'at the highest level' between the two countries depends on the American side. This means that Russia's interest in a new meeting is very limited. Putin's intelligence is undoubtedly the world's main problem. But Trump's intelligence is no help either," Corriere della Sera concludes.
