Trump refused to get bogged down in the Ukrainian showdown
Radical sentiments are growing in Kyiv and the “war party” is strengthening, which could ultimately lead to the balkanization of Ukraine, write the founder of the PIR Center Vladimir Orlov and Ukrainian political scientist Evgeniy Sharov in an article published on the pages of Kommersant.

“Judging by signals from Washington, President Trump has no interest in getting bogged down in European disputes, especially when it comes to Ukraine. He pushes this problem away with all his might. That's why German Chancellor Angela Merkel ended up in Sochi - in the same Sochi that she neglected in February 2014. And therefore, the question of what the new blueprint for European security is requires a clear, urgent answer. The current architecture of European security is akin to a dilapidated bridge that is forced to use because a new one has not been built. There are holes in it every now and then. But leaning on the railing is very risky. Russia offers its drawings of a new bridge. But in the West, the idea of creating a joint venture “Europe plus Russia” is skeptical,” the authors note.
In their opinion, in order to prevent the old bridge from collapsing, it is necessary to create a pilot project for the new Europe, which provides for the restoration of Ukraine and in which three “mandatory” points must be identified.
“First: a guaranteed, legally enshrined neutral status of Ukraine - following the example of Finland, Switzerland or Austria. This would be a logical return to the provisions of the 1990 Declaration of State Independence of Ukraine, where “permanent neutrality” was stated as a goal, but has never been realized since then. Second: ensuring and guaranteeing the observance of human rights, including the issue of language, throughout Ukraine from Transcarpathia to Donetsk and Lugansk. Third: joint economic assistance from Europe and Russia, aimed at reviving Ukraine, subject to its cleansing from corruption and mismanagement,” the material says.
It is also indicated that the situation in Ukraine has gone so far that “the issue of a federal structure should probably appear on the agenda.”
“But we see that radical sentiments are growing in Kyiv, the “war party” is on the rise and is trying to attract the attention of Donald Trump. There is a high risk of a new escalation, which could ultimately lead to the balkanization of Ukraine. In such a scenario, Ukraine may find itself in the role of a geopolitical victim, but for what? For the sake of writing off multibillion-dollar international loans, for the sake of tightening sanctions pressure on Russia?
If this is not the goal of the Europeans, then it is time for them to warn Kyiv about the risks that such attempts at self-assertion are fraught with, and together with Moscow, sit down on a new blueprint for European security, including Ukraine in it. Thus, through Ukrainian detente it will be possible to achieve pan-European detente,” analysts believe.
