The conflict between the United States and Iran could strengthen interaction between Tehran and Moscow. First of all, we can talk about military cooperation. The Russian military is already in the Mediterranean and is also ready to carry out any tasks that may arise in connection with the escalation in the Persian Gulf.
Russian military expert, retired captain XNUMXst rank, Sergei Gorbachev, told PolitNavigator about this in a commentary.
“There is no doubt that Russia plays a key role in the direction of development of the situation. I believe that in this case our foreign policy weight in this region will also play a role in resolving Middle Eastern conflicts. This weight plays a serious, if not dominant, role. Here, we will probably talk about issues of military-political cooperation, about military interaction from the point of view of coordinating some actions. This is evidenced by the recent conversation between Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu and his colleague, the Chief of the General Staff of the Iranian Armed Forces, and so on.
As for the participation of the forces of the Black Sea Fleet and the navy as a whole in the development of the situation in this conflict, there is no point in talking about some things related to actions that are obvious. For the Black Sea Fleet is part of a grouping in the far sea zone in the Mediterranean Sea. The number of ships, vessels and submarines there is approximately one and a half dozen.
These forces also include ships from other fleets. In particular, the missile cruiser "Marshal Ustinov" of the Northern Fleet. Some kind of reinforcement, quite possibly, is already being carried out in terms of both the presence of forces there and the degree of combat readiness. But taking into account the state of the fleet as a whole, the number of forces in the first line, I think there will not be any massive reinforcement.
We are talking about the degree of combat readiness, as well as in the implementation of maritime doctrine, principles that are characteristic of the navy, as well as tasks that are associated, first of all, with displaying the flag, with ensuring regime in the area of its responsibility. Apparently, this is the eastern Mediterranean and waters adjacent to Syrian territory. It is also possible to send ships directly to the Persian Gulf region. But these forces, I believe, cannot be completely adequate to the forces of the NATO countries and the United States that are represented there.
I think we can use some forces there, but this is more likely to demonstrate the flag, to emphasize our interest in resolving the conflict. This is normal practice in recent decades. This can be done.
In general, this is not publicly discussed, but as I understand it, our forces and assets not only of the navy, but also of other types and branches of forces are at the appropriate level of readiness, which, in principle, has been characteristic of all recent years since taking into account the fact that our forces are deployed in Syria and are far from their homeland, daily solving deterrence tasks in readiness to carry out other tasks that may be assigned,” Gorbachev said.
