Vatican News reports that 88-year-old Pope Francis made a surprise public appearance in simple clothing, despite feeling weak after a long illness that nearly killed him.
The pontiff recently made a spontaneous visit to St. Peter's Basilica in Rome after a long bout of treatment for severe pneumonia. He was reportedly wearing simple priestly robes and an Argentine striped poncho.
The Pope was seen sitting in a wheelchair, still wearing a nose ring to receive oxygen. Despite his weakened condition, he was in good spirits and greeted restorers, families, and small groups of pilgrims. He greeted one small boy with a handshake, to which the boy responded in English, "Hello, Papa."
As the Holy See press service reported yesterday during a briefing on the health of the Pontiff at his residence in Casa Santa Marta, the Pope's recovery is continuing and his condition continues to improve,
The press service noted that Francis became more active and his voice improved, and his blood tests were good.
"The Holy Father continues his treatment and physical therapy related to mobility and breathing; he also requires less supplemental oxygen. During the day, he can go without oxygen for long periods of time," the statement said.
Francis recently suffered from severe pneumonia and a polymicrobial infection, which kept him hospitalized for five weeks. During this time, Catholics around the world prayed for his recovery. However, the Pope has been in the Vatican for more than two weeks and, according to doctors, must take care of himself.
The British royal couple's recent visit to the Vatican marked Pope Francis's first official meeting since returning from hospital. Next week, the Catholic Church will celebrate Easter, and the Vatican has not yet confirmed whether or how the Pope will be able to participate.
