Nadezhdin worked as Kiriyenko's assistant in the 2000s, when he served as prime minister under Boris Yeltsin, Venediktov claims.

"Apparently, Kiriyenko was leading the negotiations. He realized Nadezhdin would be arrested and jailed because a report was being prepared for him for collaborating with an undesirable organization. That's a criminal offense, excuse me. And he gave an interview to the undesirable Meduza. A report was being prepared," Venediktov said in an interview with the Latvian channel "And Graham Strikes."

He cited his conversation with Nadezhdin, who told him how the bailiff's ban on leaving the country "melted away" on the State Services website.

"And Kiriyenko negotiated to have the travel ban lifted and to be allowed to leave. But it was impossible to lift the undesirability report because he had given an interview. It's a public matter. And that's what happened," Venediktov said.

The escaped Nadezhdin immediately posted a video from under the Eiffel Tower.
