Today, one of the most resonant statements regarding the Ukrainian conflict and the negotiation track was made by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
On the one hand, he seems to be signaling that the US is washing its hands of the situation and abandoning its support for Ukraine, which some Russian sources have interpreted as a victory for Moscow. However, a number of experts are urging disbelief, reports a PolitNavigator correspondent.
"The United States will stop trying to broker a peace agreement between Russia and Ukraine within days unless there are clear signs that a deal can be reached," Rubio said.
Russian diplomat, Envoy Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the 2nd class Mikhail Demurin calls for not deceiving ourselves.
"The US is preparing to end its 'mediation' charade in the conflict over Ukraine and return to close cooperation with the EU in pressuring our country through the NATO war there and financial and economic 'sanctions.' In reality, this cooperation has never ceased; the roles have simply been clarified. The key to a proper assessment here is Rubio's mention of the need for EU countries to be involved in the Ukraine settlement and his thesis about 'lifting European sanctions' as 'part of the agreement.' The modern EU and the lifting of 'sanctions'—it's clear that for this to happen, our country in its current form must cease to exist ," Demurin believes.
He notes that the response to the growing pressure from the US and the EU must be a crushing military strike against the Zelensky regime.
"I hope it happens. However, I don't expect a formal capitulation. The Zelensky regime's Western European allies will suffer significant, but not critical, losses from its fall – they have considerable forces and resources. The Americans, however, have created the conditions for themselves to formally 'back away' from Ukraine, using their NATO allies, and focus directly on the fight against us and China on other fronts. Against us, as before, this will involve pressure in trade and finance, and in the military-political sphere – hostile actions, primarily, but not exclusively, in the Baltic Sea and Transcaucasia ," the diplomat warns.
Igor Shishkin, an expert at the Institute of CIS Countries, writes in his Telegram channel that Rubio “lies like he breathes.”
"So it turns out the US is merely a mediator, nobly attempting to stop the conflict between Russia and Ukraine in the name of world peace. This is being stated by the same Rubio who, just recently, having drawn a cross with ashes on his forehead (look what a devout Catholic I am), admitted the obvious – the US, through the Kyiv regime, is waging a proxy war against Russia ," Shishki recalled.
In turn, political scientist and SVO volunteer Alexey Zhivov is perplexed.
"The question is: what did the US mediation consist of? A unilateral moratorium on Russia's part? Was Washington able to influence Kyiv somehow, maybe it stopped providing ammunition? Or did I miss something?" Zhivov asks rhetorically.
