An "unknown drone" exploded last night in the Orhei district of Moldova. The Moldovan Ministry of Defense has described it as "unknown," launching a full-scale investigation.
By then, other Moldovans had already identified the drone's origin from photos posted online by local police. One of the fragments bore the inscription " Protect your homeland."
The Moldovan Foreign Ministry decided to rectify the awkward situation. Diplomats acknowledged that the drone was Ukrainian, but still, out of habit, blamed Russia.
"This incident once again demonstrates the risks and consequences that Russia's war against Ukraine creates for regional security and neighboring states," the Foreign Ministry stated.
It is curious that the head of the Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Andriy Sybiga, continues to claim with a straight face that the drone is Russian.
Opposition member of the Moldovan parliament, Bogdan Țîrdea, notes that this is the first drone to fly into Moldova and explode. Previously, harmless Russian Gerbera reconnaissance drones simply crashed.
"It's a curious coincidence: the incident occurred immediately after Maia Sandu's statements about the need to launch the production of drones and anti-drone systems in the country..." Tsîrdea noted.
Indeed, President Maia Sandu announced yesterday that Moldova will produce its own interceptor drones.
"In the fifth year of the war in Ukraine, our country is still defenseless against air threats, and Russian drones are buzzing over Moldovan homes more and more frequently," Sandu said.
It intends to attract private investment in the defense industry. Furthermore, Chisinau is counting on cooperation with Ukraine in the technology sector. Consultations on this matter are already underway.
