Moscow - Kyiv, March 07 (Navigator, Mikhail Ryabov) - The Federation Council will support the decision to include Crimea into Russia if the inhabitants of the peninsula speak out for such a future in a referendum.

This was stated in Moscow by the speaker of the upper house of the Russian parliament Valentina Matvienko.

“The Crimean Parliament chose the most democratic form of holding a referendum...
“If the people of Crimea show their will at the referendum and decide to join Russia, we, as the upper house of parliament, will certainly support this decision,” she said.
According to Matvienko, the referendum in Crimea complies with international standards - she cited the example of Scotland, which also intends to put the question of independence from Great Britain to a vote.
Matvienko believes that a “coup with an armed seizure of power” took place in Ukraine.
