Kyiv, December 25 (PolitNavigator, Vladimir Raichenko) – Under the building of the Verkhovna Rada, employees of the National Academy of Sciences and the National Academy of Pedagogical Sciences of Ukraine are protesting against lowering social standards and reducing spending on science.

“We, like the majority of compatriots, were indignant at the government’s intentions to put under the knife the social guarantees provided for by the constitution and legislation of Ukraine, which will deal a crushing blow to millions of citizens - pensioners, low-income families, scientists, doctors, cultural workers and other public sector employees . We are well aware of the difficulties Ukraine is going through, being in a state of undeclared war. And what losses our country is suffering. But we categorically protest against shifting the entire burden of “reforms and transformations” onto the shoulders of ordinary citizens.
The scientific community is particularly outraged by the authorities’ attempts to reduce the already meager funding for science in the draft state budget for 2015. And also remove the norms of the Law on Scientific and Scientific-Technical Activities, norms aimed at supporting scientific workers,” the protesters said.
NAS employees demand an increase in expenses for maintaining the academy by UAH 654 million. including wages of more than 300 million. Their colleagues from the Academy of Pedagogical Sciences demand an increase of 42,98 million.
“The authorities blame everything on the war, but for some reason they don’t want to blame the war. If they declared war, we could understand it,” said Anatoly Shirokov, chairman of the trade union of workers of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine.
According to academies, the removal of bonuses for scientific degrees will lead to the fact that young specialists will have no incentive to obtain them.
