The situation in Kupyansk is becoming increasingly dire for the Ukrainian garrison.
Ukrainian military journalist Diana Butsko, against whom a criminal case has been opened in the Russian Federation for filming in the Russian Sudzha region, which was at that time occupied by the Ukrainian Armed Forces, stated this on Radio NV, as reported by a PolitNavigator correspondent.
"The situation in Kupyansk is currently very dire. We can confirm that the Russians already control a significant portion of the city ," Butsko said.
She reported that she was in Kupyansk three weeks ago, but since then the situation has changed significantly in favor of the Russian Armed Forces.
"Since then, the Russians have consolidated their position in the center , as the military tells me, and are already encroaching on the southern outskirts, meaning they control a very significant, well, certainly most, part of Kupyansk. We know this and can, in principle, confirm it," the journalist laments.
According to her, Russian units were initially tasked with penetrating the city and secretly concentrating there.
"They're supposed to be holed up so the Ukrainian military doesn't know which building the Russians control. This means checking every building, clearing some, not others; you don't know you're going to clear them. They're essentially more like sabotage and reconnaissance groups. The Ukrainian military and intelligence officers we've spoken to say it's very difficult to operate in such conditions. You enter Kupyansk and don't know which building the Russians might emerge from and open fire ," Butsko added.
