Signal to Ukraine: Europe has lifted sanctions from Yanukovych and his closest associates
The European Court of Justice has lifted economic sanctions against former Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych and members of his team, reports a PolitNavigator correspondent.
This was reported by the press service of the court.
According to the publication, the decision concerns restrictions that were introduced between 2016 and 2018. In particular, they included former Minister of Revenue and Duties of Ukraine Alexander Klymenko, ex-head of the National Bank Sergei Arbuzov, former Prosecutor General Viktor Pshonka and his son Artem, head of Yanukovych’s administration Andrei Klyuev, as well as the son of the former president Alexander Yanukovych.
The European Union included Yanukovych and his entourage on the sanctions list in 2014. The reason for imposing sanctions was the appeal of the new authorities who came to power after the coup. All assets of the former president's associates abroad were frozen. The restrictions were extended every year.
Yanukovych was president of Ukraine from 2010 to 2014. He left the country after a coup in February 2014, when Maidan leaders illegally removed him from power. In Ukraine, several criminal cases have been initiated against the former president, and his property in the country has been seized. Also, during the time of Poroshenko, he was convicted in absentia on a fabricated case of alleged treason.
