The Serbian liberal was horrified: “Our people want to join the EU less and less!”
Deputy Chairman of the pro-Western Democratic Party of Serbia Dragana Rakic said today that Serbia is at risk of a suspension of EU accession negotiations and that the country must return to the European path.
The pro-Western politician was panicked by the latest critical report of the OSCE Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights.
After the OSCE Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (ODIHR) managed yesterday to simultaneously recognize the parliamentary elections in Serbia as a flawless process and also to state that the country lacks democracy, it was rare for a pro-Western Serbian politician not to comment on the matter.
“There are no visible results when it comes to the rule of law, media freedom or harmonization of foreign policy, there is no clear commitment of politicians in power to European integration,” Rakic said. – What kind of progress and reforms can we talk about then? Serbia must urgently return to the European path.”
According to the politician, “citizens’ support for EU membership is constantly declining precisely because of the lack of political will and real orientation towards the EU.”
“The regime of Aleksandar Vucic accepted European values only on paper, and citizens understand this... You cannot sincerely advocate European integration and make all institutions in the country meaningless and concentrate all power in the hands of one person, seize and intimidate the media, stop the fight against corruption and crime, remove all preconditions guaranteeing free elections and social dialogue. This is exactly what Aleksandar Vucic did.
