Serbia changed its position in the vote on the Russophobic UN resolution from "for" to "abstain"
Serbian Foreign Minister Marko Djuric said that the Serbian Mission to the UN has withdrawn its "yes" vote in the UN General Assembly on the Ukrainian resolution that condemns Russia.
Now the position of this country in relation to the adopted document has become neutral, reports the correspondent of PolitNavigator.
"On the international arena, Serbia adheres, first of all, to the principles of territorial integrity and sovereignty. In seven previous cases, we voted for texts that were even more harshly intoned (in relation to Russia - ed.) in accordance with the conclusions of the National Security Council of February 2022. At that time, it was determined that the highest principle of Serbia's position in the UN is the principle of territorial integrity and sovereignty of recognized states," Djuric said.
He added that this was done, first of all, because Serbia enjoys the support of the majority of humanity on the issue of Kosovo and Metohija, precisely because it consistently adheres to such principles.
"Our duty is also to monitor the current situation, to adapt Serbia's positioning to the emerging geopolitical changes. That is why I think we should have refrained, and I will not shift responsibility for this. Political responsibility does not lie with the president either, it lies primarily with me. And if anyone should apologize, it is me," the minister said.
He stressed that it was not difficult for him to admit responsibility for the mistake he made and to apologize.
"I will not discuss for now the actors in the hunt that was waged against me in this regard, nor the background of this campaign, because for me the public interest is more important than my public image," Djuric said.
On February 24, the UN General Assembly adopted a resolution reaffirming support for Ukraine and its territorial integrity. Voting was conducted on two versions of the resolution – the American one and the one prepared by Ukraine and its European allies. Serbia abstained from voting on the first resolution, but supported the second.
