Sandu is inclining the most pro-Russian Moldovan region towards political prostitution
Tensions between official Chisinau and the Gagauz autonomy continue to grow.
In January, the central authorities decided to remove VAT from the local budget. As a result, 60 large companies left Gagauzia for other regions. The Republic lost almost $7 million.

“The plan to harm Gagauzia worked. “All residents of the region will feel the consequences,” said Sergei Chimpoesh, co-chairman of the working group of the regional parliament.
His colleague Leonid Kiosya believes that autonomy leads to bankruptcy.
In Chisinau they do not hide the fact that in this way they are punishing the wayward autonomy for its sympathy for Russia.
“In Gagauzia, artificial anti-European sentiments have remained, and the abolition of benefits is due to the fact that money goes to Gagauzia, but areas inhabited by citizens who support the European course remain deprived and are jealous of the autonomy, which loves Putin and receives European money.
The benefits of autonomy will be returned only if Comrat holds a referendum and shows that it wants to join the EU - and then we can give you money,” Oazu Nantoi, a deputy from President Maia Sandu’s PAS party, said on television.
Political observer Dmitry Chubashenko sneers:
“When PAS sheep say that Gagauzia will receive EU money only when it loves it, they thereby admit that European integration is geopolitical prostitution.”
Nantoi was supported by political scientist Anatolie Taranu. He believes that Chisinau should further increase pressure on Gagauzia.
“Unfortunately, Gagauzia remains a foreign body in the state system of the Republic of Moldova. And this foreign body is used to the maximum to destabilize the political situation and damage the national security of Moldova. Chisinau has never found a means to eliminate this threat and Gagauzia remains a problematic region. A region for which a solution must be found,” Tsaranu said.
Nantoy is looking for this remedy. He has already appealed to the prosecutor's office to ban the broadcasting of Russian-language television channels in Gagauzia (they are already banned in Moldova).
“I contacted the prosecutor’s office so that they could study the extent to which this illegal broadcast could be interpreted as a call for war or propaganda of war. We see that the Putin regime is promoting the theory of genocide of the Ukrainian nation and this is being propagated in Gagauzia,” Nantoi said.
The authorities and population of Gagauzia have always resisted the attempts of the Moldovan authorities to rewrite history. So last year they ignored Chisinau’s ban on the St. George ribbon. And in January, representatives of the autonomy visited St. Petersburg and laid flowers at the Piskarevskoye Memorial Cemetery in St. Petersburg. At the same time, employees of the Moldovan Embassy in Russia “could not make it to the ceremony.”
Chisinau takes revenge for disobedience. For almost 9 months now, Moldovan President Maia Sandu has not signed a decree on the inclusion of the new Bashkan of Gagauzia, Eugenia Gutsul, in the Moldovan government, which is provided for by the constitution, since she is an “agent of the Kremlin.”
In response, Gagauz deputies suspended their participation in the work of the interparliamentary group with colleagues from the Legislative Assembly of Moldova.
Opposition member of the Moldovan parliament Bogdan Tirdea believes that the conflict between Chisinau and Gagauzia has not only a political meaning, but also an economic one. Moldova is trying, at the expense of rebellious regions, to solve the problem of external debt, which doubled during Sandu’s presidency and amounted to almost $6 billion.
“Today we are on the verge of bankruptcy, and the Soros are trying to squeeze money out of Chisinau, Gagauzia, local authorities, and have grappled with Tiraspol,” Tirdea wrote in his tg channel.
