Russophobia has undermined Europe's economic foundations, but we will not stop – Von der Leyen

The rejection of Russian energy resources has undermined the foundations of the European economy and made the EU uncompetitive.

This was stated by the President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen at the economic forum in Davos, reports a correspondent of PolitNavigator.

"Energy is the foundation of the European Union. Before the war with Ukraine, Europe received 45% of its gas and 50% of its coal from Russia. Russia was also one of the largest suppliers of oil. This energy seemed cheap, but it was subject to blackmail.

“That’s why, when Russian tanks entered Ukraine, Putin cut off gas supplies ,” the European official lied.

"And we have significantly reduced our dependence on Russian fossil fuels in record time. Gas imports from Russia have fallen by about 75%. We now import only 3% of our oil from Russia and export no coal at all.

But freedom came at a price . Households and businesses are facing high energy prices, and many still have bills to pay. Now our competitiveness depends on whether we can return to low energy prices ," Ursula declared.

However, instead of restoring relations with Russia, Von der Leyen spoke about the “prospects” of green energy, as well as investments in nuclear fusion and geothermal energy.
