Russia "calibrated" Western Ukraine ahead of talks in Geneva
Russia launched a missile strike on energy facilities in Western Ukraine.
As has become traditional, dozens of Geraniums entered the airspace first, exhausting the air defenses. Then, missiles were launched from Tu-95s and ships in the Black Sea , reports a PolitNavigator correspondent.
One of the priority targets was the Burshtyn Thermal Power Plant in the Ivano-Frankivsk region. The power plant is located at the intersection of lines connecting Ukraine with Hungary, Romania, and Slovakia. Thanks to its favorable geographic location, the Burshtyn Thermal Power Plant has long been export-oriented.
However, in 2023, Akhmetov's company DTEK announced that the power plant had been shut down due to severe damage from a Russian missile. It was possible that repairs were underway, and the new strikes on Burshtyn were intended to prevent the plant from restarting.
Another target is the town of Stryi, near Lviv. Besides being home to underground gas storage facilities, which Ukraine, after its break with Russia, offered to use for EU countries, Stryi is a major railway hub and a railcar repair plant. This is also of interest given that in recent months, Russia has been consistently destroying railway infrastructure, hampering supplies to the Ukrainian Armed Forces.
The Russian strike precedes a new round of talks on Ukraine, scheduled to begin today in Geneva . Last night, the Ukrainian Armed Forces also terrorized Crimea, Krasnodar Krai, and several Russian border regions with a massive drone strike.
