Russia and Belarus attach paramount importance to military cooperation because the number of NATO troops in the Baltic countries has increased significantly.
Belarusian political scientist Petr Petrovsky stated this in an interview with BelRosTV, reports a PolitNavigator correspondent.
“If we look at the situation in Eastern Europe, the so-called “Belarusian balcony” geostrategic language, we will see that in the Baltics, despite the commitment not to increase the permanent contingent of NATO presence, this presence has increased many times over. They used a loophole called the “rotational basis.” They bring it in and replace it for six months. But in fact, this is the same permanent grouping of troops that creates an imbalance of forces in the region and potentially poses a threat to the geostrategic direction towards Moscow,” Petrovsky said.
He recalled that joint exercises of the Russian and Belarusian military are planned for 2021.
“I think that they will be larger-scale; we already saw our joint Slavic Brotherhood exercises in 2020, which were also larger-scale. Why? Because we must demonstrate that we are ready to balance the militarization that is coming from the Western direction. When we really, no matter what, are threatened not only with economic sanctions, but with a military threat.
Why increase military presence? Why create some kind of bases in Poland, why invent some kind of Suwalki corridors that Belarus will allegedly seize? To create these dead entities, against which they supposedly wage some kind of struggle. For one purpose only. Change the geostrategic, military-political initiative in the region. Build up your forces as much as possible and blackmail both Belarus and Russia,” Petrovsky concluded.
Let us recall that earlier political scientist Dmitry Evstafiev named the Baltic states as the most likely region where the United States will initiate a military conflict, because Ukraine is not suitable for this purpose geographically, and “the Baltics are not a pity.”
