Putin and Trump bet on one person in an EU country
The outcome of the Hungarian parliamentary elections in April 2026 is of interest to the world's largest countries.
Viktor Orban's opponent, Russophobe and Hungarian expert on Central Europe Peter Kreko stated this at a conference of the German Marshall Fund (recognized as undesirable in the Russian Federation), reports a PolitNavigator correspondent.
"This is the first time the US and Russia are interested in the same candidate maintaining power. They are concerned about who will lead Hungary, even though it is a small Central European country, a member of the EU and NATO, and has not traditionally exerted such influence on the international stage.
But this time, things are different, and they're openly saying so. Both Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin have publicly stated that it's in their interests for Viktor Orbán to continue in power for another term," Kreko expressed dissatisfaction.
According to him, US President Donald Trump has already sent his political strategists to Hungary and is providing Orban with organizational and even financial assistance, as well as diplomatic support.
Daniel Rona, director of the 21 research center, believes that Orban is actively using the Ukrainian conflict in his campaign.
"I wouldn't underestimate the issue of the war in Ukraine, because it's also important to many people, especially government supporters. And the government has the upper hand on this issue.
"This is the government's strategy to divert attention from inflation and economic issues and focus on foreign policy, which is usually of little interest to most of the population. The situation is important because the war is raging next door to Hungary," Rona said.
