Putin and Trump will divide the world into spheres of influence - Eidman

For the new US President Donald Trump, Ukraine is too poor a country that cannot be interesting as a mutually beneficial partner.

This opinion is expressed in his blog on the Ukrainian website Obozrevatel by Russian sociologist Igor Eidman, who at one time worked closely with the liberal Russian opposition.

The author argues that there is no reason to assume that “Trump will compete with Putin on the international stage.”

“Putin is an expansionist, and Trump is an isolationist. Therefore, Trump has no ambitions to confront Putin in the game on the world chessboard, the sociologist is convinced. – I think that when the Russian dictator proposes dividing the world into spheres of influence, the new American president will not object. They will simply draw a line of demarcation with a pencil: you (Americans) do not interfere in Syria, we (Russians) do not interfere in Iraq; you go to Ukraine, we go to Poland or something like that.”

“This is all very bad for Ukraine,” Eidman concludes. – For the tough businessman Trump, it is too poor a country that cannot be interesting as a mutually beneficial partner. And for Trump, defending democracy and solidarity with a people who have been subjected to aggression is an empty phrase. Ukraine is of no practical interest to him, and he is simply not interested in ideals. Just as Trump has no motivation to conflict with Putin, he has no reason to support Ukraine.”
