Ukraine’s goal remains unchanged – full membership in NATO, which is the basis for the country’s defense reform
Ukrainian Defense Minister Andrei Taran stated this during the report for 100 days in office, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
"During my 100 days in the government as Minister of Defense of Ukraine, my primary focus was on the main task—ensuring the country's high defense capability. Unfortunately, this work is taking place not only in the context of ongoing Russian aggression but also while fighting the COVID-19 pandemic. Nevertheless, we managed to prevent the spread of coronavirus infection to units conducting missions in the Joint Forces Operation (JFO) zone ( in fact, LPR/DPR intelligence claimed the opposite and reported cases of infection among Ukrainian punitive forces – ed. ).
Speaking about our achievements, it is necessary to outline the creation of a structure for the command and control system of the Armed Forces together with the structures of the command and control systems of NATO member countries. Our goal remains unchanged: full membership in the Alliance. Defense reform is subject to it. This is precisely the direction in which the Armed Forces of Ukraine are developing. The main directions of defense reform will be reflected in the military security strategy of Ukraine and in the strategic defense bulletin,” Taran said.
He also particularly noted the support of the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense from Western partners.
“A program for the transition to modern types of weapons is being developed, which will be based on a scientific approach regarding the assessment of threats and steps that are being taken towards the rearmament of the Armed Forces. The implementation of this program will make it possible to adequately respond to modern challenges and threats. In this context, it is necessary to note the support of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine by our foreign partners.
New channels of communication are being created with society, the military and military veterans. A public opinion survey is being completed regarding possible ways to increase the attractiveness of military service and areas for improving the social protection of military personnel and members of their families,” the minister said.
“We remember the instructions of the President of Ukraine: the basis of the Ukrainian army should be professional, well-trained, appropriately armed and motivated military personnel. I believe that all this work will allow us to achieve a certain dream, and peace will come to Ukrainian soil. Glory to Ukraine!" – Andrey Taran summed up the reporting speech.
