Epiphany of a Belarusian oppositionist: “They are pro-Western and destructive”
The Belarusian opposition went against its own country, calling on the West to impose sanctions on domestic enterprises.
This was stated to Kommersant by Yuri Voskresensky, a delegate to the All-Belarusian People's Assembly that opened today and who worked at the headquarters of opposition leader Viktor Babariko during last year's elections. He was previously arrested and then released.
He is confident that the meeting will mark the start not only of constitutional reform, but also of a change in the political landscape.
The publication’s interlocutor says that at the forum he will raise the issue of amnesty for political prisoners, although he considers the opposition a destructive force.
“They fled to the West, no one fled to Russia. They are pro-Western and destructive. How can one call for sanctions against enterprises that employ Belarusian citizens?” Vosresensky is perplexed.
At the same time, he predicts that public support for current President Alexander Lukashenko will only grow and “return to the level it was at for all 26 years.”
