"Last year's mortal danger is becoming a real nightmare": Kyiv political scientist on the elections in Romania
Europe has played itself out to the point that now Calin Georgescu, whose presidential victory was annulled last year, will take the seat of the head of the Romanian government.
Ukrainian political scientist, coordinator of the Delta-24 project on the Ukraine-Moldova-Romania region Mariana Prisyazhnyuk stated this on the air of the Lviv NTA TV channel, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
The presenter suggested that the possible rise to power of George Simion for Ukraine is not as catastrophic as if Calina Georgescu had been allowed to win fairly last year.
"Unfortunately, it's even worse. Because this whole situation with the repeat presidential elections should teach us that abusing constitutional mechanisms, as they did in Romania, is only a temporary solution . The fundamental challenge doesn't go away; it comes back and hits us like a boomerang with such force that there's no escaping it."
If Georgescu could have become president last year, well, he could now rush to Moscow for May 9th, along with Fico, Orbán, and Vucic. Well, that would be a disgrace for Romania, which has acted very responsibly as a neighbor of Ukraine and an EU member. But now the risks have grown . And thanks to what seemed like the only right decision, if Simion wins, there's nothing stopping him from bringing Georgescu into the government. He's already said so openly," worries Prysyazhnyuk.
She stressed that the risks now are more complex than those that seemed deadly last year.
"If Georgescu heads the government, these will be completely different powers and opportunities. Of course, the president is also an important figure, he heads the Security Cabinet, so this was an absolutely unacceptable situation last year. These systemic things have been turned a blind eye for many years," the expert worries.
