Under the Bolsheviks, Ukraine had a larger fleet than it does now
The Ukrainian fleet was much more developed in Soviet times than during the independent navigation of the state.
This was stated by Maksym Palamarchuk, author of the book "Naval Power and Its Limits," at a press conference in Kyiv, reports a PolitNavigator correspondent.
“The maritime state is a late phenomenon. We can talk about a maritime state in the modern sense starting from the 17th century. In the 17th century, we were part of another empire, and we participated in the construction of its fleet. In Ukraine, battleships of the Russian Empire and battleships of the Second World War of the USSR, and aircraft carriers of the USSR were built. But it was someone else's fleet.
In those moments when the state appeared, let us remember the state of Hetman Skoropadsky, he made great efforts to build the Ukrainian fleet. Even in its Bolshevik forms, that is, in the Ukrainian SSR, Ukraine made efforts to do this. Interestingly, the first large ship introduced on the Black Sea was called "Chervona Ukraine", in Ukrainian. And to a certain extent it was the Ukrainian fleet. Then we managed to overcome the so-called communist vision of Ukraine, and “Chervona Ukraine” remained such a name-monument to that conditionally leftist version of the development of Ukraine, which also was not realized,” Palamarchuk said.
