Chisinau - Bucharest, May 14 (Navigator, Petr Alekseev) - Kyiv should negotiate with the South-East of Ukraine, while Donetsk and Lugansk should not be a party to international consultations on normalizing the situation in the country. This was stated by Romanian President Traian Basescu.

He believes that Russia currently has “two priorities: the federalization of Ukraine, which began with the recognition of the results of the referendums in the Lugansk and Donetsk regions, and preventing the holding of presidential elections on May 25.”

“It is clear that the Russian Federation wants to destabilize Ukraine and take control of it partially or completely. Romania does not recognize either the annexation of Crimea or the referendums in Donetsk and Lugansk. Because they contradict the Constitution,” Basescu said, as quoted by the Romanian publication Realitatea.

“We don’t think that the Russian Federation intends to invade Ukraine. We ask that President Putin keep his word. “All the information shows that the president was not telling the truth when he announced the withdrawal of troops from the border with Ukraine,” the head of Romania said.

Basescu noted the need to sign an association agreement between Ukraine and the European Union. He also touched upon the European prospects of the Republic of Moldova, recalling the signing of a similar agreement between the Republic of Moldova and the EU, which could take place in the near future. Basescu noted that “Moldova is exposed to security risks regarding Transnistria, Gagauzia and the territory inhabited by the Bulgarian minority.”

“We do not believe that the Russian Federation will send troops to the region beyond those already there,” he added.
