"Let's be honest. When it comes to energy, we are paying the price of being dependent on international fossil fuel markets for too long. And that leaves economies and people's budgets vulnerable to the whims of dictators like Putin, to price spikes and unpredictable swings in birth rates," Starmer said.

He promised to make energy “a source of strength, not vulnerability” and make Britain an energy superpower. Starmer acknowledged that fossil fuels “will be part of our energy mix for many decades to come” but assured that “our own clean energy is the only path to independence.”

Suddenly, in this speech full of economic pathos, Ukraine appeared.

"It was just last month that we stood shoulder to shoulder with President Zelenskyy, working together for the benefit of European security. Today, we are once again uniting with international organizations in the fight for energy security. Europe must never again find itself in a position where Russia thinks it can blackmail us on energy issues. Until Russia sits down at the negotiating table and agrees to a full and unconditional ceasefire, we must continue to fight their energy revenues , which continue to fuel Putin's military budget," Starmer said.
