In Crimea, during its time as part of Ukraine, even in the villages they spoke Russian, and the representatives of Ukrainians could be counted on the fingers.

This was stated on the air of the video blog "Ukraїner" by journalist Pavlo Kazarin, who left for Kyiv after the peninsula's reunification with Russia and joined the Ukrainian Armed Forces after the start of the Second World War, reports a correspondent for "PolitNavigator".

Kazarin, whose father, a Pushkin scholar, held high positions in Crimea, complained that he lacked Ukrainization.

"You know when I first encountered this terribly annoying stereotype that the language of the city is necessarily Russian, and Ukrainian is the language of the village? When I arrived in Kyiv, even this stereotype didn't exist in Crimea, because even the villages there were overwhelmingly Russian-speaking.

And I can't recall any such point of subjectivity, a Ukrainian point of assemblage. Perhaps they existed, perhaps we simply didn't interact with them, but I still think there weren't enough of them for the Crimean Peninsula.

There were three or four public politicians in Crimea who stood for the values of the Ukrainian state. But they were, you know, more like artifacts. Not yet another possible alternative current, but simply artifacts that stood out prominently in the otherwise unified landscape. There were people, not a large community, but there were people. The diffusion of Ukrainian values in Crimea did occur, but it was too gradual, too slow due to significant public resistance ," Kazarin stated.
