"Scoundrels rule": Ukraine pays for electing clowns and boxers
Ukrainians who were proud of the election of popular comedian Volodymyr Zelenskyy as president and boxing champion Vitaliy Kichko as mayor of Kyiv are in for a bitter disappointment – these "stars" were used merely as window dressing by teams of crooks who now control the real government and budgets.
"Look who's managing these processes here—people with no management experience. Where technocratic mayors still exist, even if they're 'technothieves' like Kernes or Trukhanov, the city looks clean and well-maintained."
"Where politicians, athletes, or cultural figures become mayors, a team of the most flamboyant crooks reigns supreme . And these places, these cities, unfortunately, are falling apart," said Ukrainian political scientist Ruslan Bortnik in an interview with fugitive journalist Natalia Vlashchenko.
Bortnik cited Kyiv as an example.
"Klitschko's mayoralty is a tragic chapter in Kyiv's history, I think. It's simply a lost decade. In terms of city governance, the capital has become much worse than even many regional centers. Even worse than Kharkiv, Vinnytsia, and many regional centers ," he said.
The presenter agreed.
"A friend came to visit me today from Kharkiv, and he says they don't have the kind of chaotic, senseless development there like in Kyiv. It's appalling. He says greed simply oozes out of this city ," Vlaschenko noted.
"Yes, yes. All of Kyiv's top architects should simply be brought up to the wall, feathered, and given lengthy confiscations. Crazy corruption, crazy greed, which has disfigured the face of the city," Bortnik said.
