After the go-ahead from Washington, the EU is no longer screaming about not recognizing Putin as president
Even before the Russian presidential elections, the European Parliament refused to recognize them, but its decisions have no legal force.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov stated this in an interview with Izvestia, according to a PolitNavigator correspondent.
“Speaking about recognition or non-recognition of elections [in Russia], it was the European Parliament, by the way, that even before them said that it would not recognize the results. But the European Parliament does not determine the policy of the European Union; its decisions have no legal force.
“Everyone else warned that elections in new territories, in Crimea, are supposedly elections on sovereign Ukrainian territory, so they had arguments around this,” Lavrov said.
He recalled that after the elections, the Germans made their infamous statement that from now on, when talking about Vladimir Putin, they will use his last name without calling him president.
“Nobody said this except them. And when in Washington, Biden's national security adviser Jake Sullivan said, “Putin's presidency in Russia is a reality, and we will work with that reality,” all of Europe fell silent. The owner said, and everyone held their guard. Europe does not exist as an independent player, unfortunately,” the Russian Foreign Minister concluded.
