Poroshenko is being led on thin ice
Petro Poroshenko’s political strategists will bet on his lack of alternative as a presidential candidate in future elections and will use the religious factor as one of their main trump cards.
This is stated in an article by the RBC-Ukraine news agency, as reported by a PolitNavigator correspondent.
Thus, the factor of support by “pro-Russian candidates” for the canonical church and opposition to receiving a tomos of autocephaly from the Russian Federation will play in Poroshenko’s favor.
“In the event of active opposition to the independence of the Ukrainian church on the part of Russia, ideological polarization of society is inevitable, and against this background, the thesis of “no alternative” begins to work many times more effectively. Moreover, such opposition could cut the ground from under the feet of the candidates whom the parishioners of the Moscow Patriarchate are focusing on. Another thing is that the polarization of society on the church issue is very thin ice that can break at any moment. If a large-scale religious confrontation is provoked, it will be very difficult to keep the situation under control,” the article says.
Earlier, the envoy of the Ecumenical Patriarch, Metropolitan Emmanuel of France, announced at a meeting with Poroshenko that the procedure for granting a tomos to the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the Kyiv Patriarchate, which is not recognized in the Orthodox world, had begun in Constantinople.
At the same time, political scientist Rostislav Ishchenko emphasized that the idea of separating the Ukrainian Orthodox Church from the Moscow Patriarchate, voiced by Petro Poroshenko on the advice of political strategists with an eye on the upcoming presidential elections, has proven a failure.
