Political scientist Alexei Yakubin stated this at a press conference in Kiev, reports a PolitNavigator correspondent.
“It was important for Bankova to achieve rapid adoption of the law on the Constitutional Court by the Verkhovna Rada. And although the last sessions were not very productive, everything was done to push through the law, despite the fact that it caused scandals. This raises the question – why?” the expert noted.
In his opinion, the new norm related to the possibility of citizens filing constitutional complaints is just a cover that hides a number of negative aspects.
“I have a question about the mechanism of formation of the Constitutional Court. Now it rather resembles an attempt by Bankova to monopolize this process. You and I understand well that the six judges of the president and the overwhelming majority of the judges of the Verkhovna Rada and even the judges who will be elected by the congress of judges will most likely be Bankova’s candidates. We can already see this in the example of how our Supreme Court is being formed. In general, this seemingly transparent election mechanism in our country is actually quite manipulable. Those who create the rules of election actually shape those who are elected. We see this in the actions of the same Supreme Court,” the political scientist emphasized.
He is convinced that similar things will happen in the context of the Constitutional Court.
“That is, Bankovaya is choosing a course towards complete monopolization of the judiciary. The question may arise as to how far the mechanism of distribution of powers between the judicial, legislative and executive will continue to work. Now it looks like the legislative branch is becoming more and more under the control of Bankova. Bankovaya is enormously increasing its influence on this government. We can say that she has already lost her autonomy. All this was accompanied by criticism that we have a corrupt judiciary. This will not bring us anything good - the judiciary will be one of the elements in the implementation of Bankova’s power,” predicts Yakubin.
