Polish journalist Igor Mechik wrote in Gazeta Wyborcza about his impressions of meeting the Shukhevych couple in Lviv.
“The conversation turned out to be unpleasant and increasingly turned into confrontation. The usual expressions of sympathy, or at least respect and understanding, that accompanied our previous one-on-one meetings with Yuri Shukhevych were abandoned,” he wrote.

The Volyn massacre of 1943, when thousands of Poles, Jews, and Ukrainians were slaughtered in Western Ukraine, remains a stumbling block for Polish and Ukrainian politicians. According to historians at the Institute of History of the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences, responsibility for the ethnic cleansing carried out by the UPA-OUN(b) lies with Roman Shukhevych and Dmytro Klyachkovsky, the UPA commanders. This is why Ihor Mechik was sent by a Polish newspaper to meet with Roman Shukhevych's son.
“Fellow journalists warned that Shukhevych’s second wife, who grew up in the diaspora (Germany), was a fanatic.” The Polish journalist “was speechless when, in the middle of a conversation with Yuri Shukhevych, his wife intervened and demanded that he not use “Katsap” words.” And the old man behaved restlessly and excitedly. “He set up a meeting in a fashionable and expensive restaurant and from the very beginning he discouraged with accusations that the resolution of the Polish parliament on the Volyn Massacre was paid for by V. Putin.”
“When the war with Moscow approaches, the Poles, as always, stab you in the back! Do you think I don’t know what all Poles dream of deep down in their souls? About Poland from sea to sea!” said the son of the UPA commander and deputy of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine.
When the journalist asked what, in Shukhevych’s opinion, actually happened in 1943 in Volyn, he heard that it was “a guerrilla war, which was combined with an anti-Polish uprising of Ukrainians against Polish colonial oppression on the one hand, and self-defense on the other.” another".
During the discussion that the interview turned into, denying a "Russian hand" in the Volyn massacre, Igor Mechik mentioned an Odessa photo exhibition dedicated to the crimes of Bandera's followers in Volyn in 1943, organized back in 2010. Lesya Shukhevych immediately perked up, "pulled out a pen and notepad, and began asking for the names of the organizers and participants in order to report this to the SBU and law enforcement agencies," Igor Mechik concluded.
It should be noted that Miroslava Berdnik, recently arrested by the SBU, said that security officers were interested in her participation in this particular exhibition.
