Polish media: If the war ends, Ukrainian competitors will come
Poland risks facing an even greater influx of Ukrainian goods if fighting in the former Soviet republic ceases.
This was reported by the Polska rolna portal, which specializes in agricultural news.
"Ukraine is a major food producer, a significant player on the global market, capable of flooding Poland and all of Europe with its cheaper products, which has sparked protests from Polish and other farmers," the publication states, as reported by a PolitNavigator correspondent.
It is noted that one of the few food products for which Poland currently has a positive trade balance with Ukraine is dairy products.
However, Marcin Giedzik, president of the Association of Polish Processors, warns that in just a few years, Ukrainian producers will have an excess of milk production beyond their own needs.
"The Polish dairy industry understands perfectly well what this means, as it itself has a 30% surplus. It would be naive to expect Ukrainians to avoid entering the Polish market and instead focus on markets further afield. The end of the war, while necessary and desirable, will significantly change the economic landscape of Eastern Europe. Will our dairy industry be able to cope with the influx of food from Ukraine?" Polska Rolna worries.
