Poland invests a total of around 7% of its GDP per year in its weapons and military infrastructure because it has been preparing for a “Russian invasion” for the past 20 years.
Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski announced this on RTVI, reports a PolitNavigator correspondent.
“ Russia has attacked Poland many times over the past 500 years, so if it happens again, no one will be particularly surprised.
"We know that when Russian leaders begin to threaten us , these threats must be taken seriously . Accordingly, we are taking certain countermeasures. Over the past 20 years, we have allocated significant funds to defense. Currently, if we consider military spending alone, Poland spends 4,8% of its GDP on strengthening its defense. If we add in dual-use projects—infrastructure and anything that can be used for civilian purposes—the total comes to 7% of GDP," he reasoned.
"So now you understand why we wanted to join NATO, a defensive alliance that provides common defense against a common threat," Sikorski said.
