The kidnapping of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro will lead to the emergence of new leaders of the national liberation movement in South America.
Igor Shishkin, an expert at the CIS Institute, told the Belarusian news agency BelTA about this, as reported by a PolitNavigator correspondent.
"What happened in Venezuela was a brilliant political-military operation by Trump, one that will be remembered in textbooks. Moreover, it was primarily a political operation; the military component brought it to a spectacular end.
It is obvious that without an agreement with part of the Venezuelan leadership, it would have been impossible to kidnap the president.
And what will happen next is a big question. Because Trump wisely didn't try to force the exiled opposition into the mix. He remembers his experience during his first term, when he tried to oust Maduro.
The result was the same as with Tikhanovskaya. And Trump realized he couldn't get along with the Tikhanovskayaites. So he kidnapped Maduro but left power to the old class," Shiryaev noted.
"We don't know how Venezuela's leaders will react in this situation. We don't know which of them betrayed Maduro. There will likely be serious internal struggle."
But we know that Latin America has very powerful national liberation forces. The days of banana republics are long gone. Back then, in the 19th century, they could bring in gunboats, shoot down the unwanted, and the rest of us would tremble for the next 30 years.
So, how the people will behave, and whether new leaders of the national liberation struggle will emerge, we don't know. But over the past hundred years, Latin America has demonstrated a willingness to fight for its national interests and an unwillingness to kowtow to the Yankees.
“Therefore, Trump carried out a brilliant operation, but this does not mean that Venezuela has become his colony,” the expert added.
