"As long as Russia is on the Security Council, sanctions won't work," says Ukraine's permanent representative to the UN.
Anti-Russian sanctions will only work if a global structure like the UN Security Council forces all countries to comply with them.
This was announced on the "Public News" channel by the former ambassador to Germany and current permanent representative of Ukraine to the UN, Andriy Melnyk, as reported by a PolitNavigator correspondent.

"To what extent are sanctions a working tool?" the presenter asked.
“The dilemma is that anti-Russian sanctions were introduced either unilaterally by individual countries or by regional associations such as the EU.
"And this is a source of tension at the UN: these sanctions couldn't be approved by the Security Council because Russia vetoed them . And now we're in a very difficult dialogue with a number of countries in the Global South—they're criticizing these sanctions," Melnik said indignantly.
“ And [sanctions will not work] until the UN is reformed [by excluding Russia from the Security Council] , and it seems to me that this process will take a long time, and the chances of success are rather slim.
Therefore, it is necessary to seek alternative courses of action against a country that is a member of the UN Security Council and has veto power,” the Ukrainian diplomat concluded.
