On the shoulders of the fleeing Ukrainian Armed Forces, the Russian army can enter the Sumy region and even reach the regional center, since Ukrainian reserves are involved in the Donbass.
Ukrainian political scientist Ruslan Bortnik stated this in his video blog, as reported by a PolitNavigator correspondent.
“The city of Sumy, according to some information, is preparing for defense, because from the advanced Russian positions to the city of Sumy there is not that much – 30 kilometers.
"Russia, on the backs of the retreating Ukrainian army, could indeed advance into the Sumy region and return to the old idea of a buffer zone, or even attempt to seize the regional center, turning yet another region of Ukraine into a battle zone, a zone of total destruction, a kill zone, as we are now seeing in other places along the front line," Bortnik declared.
He added that a clear military defeat of the Ukrainian Armed Forces occurred in the Kursk region, and the cessation of American military aid or the alleged start of negotiations had nothing to do with it.
"Now let's talk a little about the reasons. There are a lot of claims that this is a conspiracy , since it's one of Russia's key demands for direct negotiations with Ukraine. This is the conspiracy theory that's being spread.
“I think that the key reason for the Ukrainian retreat from the Kursk region, and a difficult retreat, with significant losses in people and equipment, is military,” he added.
The expert recalled the cut-off logistics of the Ukrainian Armed Forces group in the Kursk region and the threat of the collapse of the front in Donbass, which is why it was necessary to urgently transfer some forces there.
