The effectiveness of American Patriot air defense systems is not 90%, but rather 2-3%. This became clear during the US-Iraq War, and the situation hasn't changed.
Massachusetts Institute of Technology professor and Pentagon adviser Ted Postol stated this in an interview with Glenn Diesen, a professor at the University of Southeastern Norway, as reported by a PolitNavigator correspondent.
"This will now be repeated among European politicians and other leaders who seem to believe, without evidence, that this system is effective...
"The system hasn't actually worked since the 1991 Gulf War. They think they have to spend tens of millions of dollars on new interceptors to protect themselves. That's a serious problem," Postol said.
He recounted a curious episode that occurred at a hearing in the US Congress where he was giving a report.
"At one point, the committee chairman asked the general in charge of the program what the Army meant by interception. Since I'd previously shown a video proving there had been no interceptions, the general responded, to general laughter, 'We mean by interception when a Patriot and a Skat simply passed each other in the sky,'" Postol recalled.
